Most studios answer "it depends". It does, but you still deserve a number to plan around. This is the price sheet we work from, with examples of what a small, medium and large tattoo costs.
Find the size of your design and read off the level of detail. The final price is agreed once the artist has seen the design, placement and skin.
Dates, words and small symbols
Minimum price
Small flowers, script and simple designs
Typically forearm, calf or shoulder blade
Upper arm, thigh and larger compositions
Sleeves, backs and large projects
Over several sessions
Black and grey at no extra cost. Colour normally adds about 15 %, and demanding placements such as ribs, neck, hands and feet about 10 %. The final price is agreed in the free consultation.
A small tattoo under 5 cm, such as a date, a small symbol or a word in fine line, costs NOK 1,500–2,000. It is at the minimum price however simple it is.
Most forearm designs are between 15 and 25 cm, and cost NOK 2,500–7,000 depending on how much shading and detail there is. The forearm is one of the easiest placements, so there is no surcharge.
Designs between 25 and 35 cm cost NOK 4,500–12,000. Anything over 35 cm, such as a half or full sleeve or a back piece, starts at NOK 8,000 and is priced per session or full day. Large projects are done over several sessions, and you pay per session.
A cover-up is priced like any other tattoo, but usually ends up larger than the original, often one and a half to two times the size. The assessment is free. Read more about cover-ups.
Four things decide where a tattoo lands in the table.
The biggest single factor. A 20 cm design does not take twice as long as a 10 cm one, it often takes three times as long.
Clean linework is quick. Dense shading, realism and smooth gradients take more hours in the chair and more preparation.
Ribs, neck, hands and feet are harder to work on. The forearm and calf are the easiest.
Colour needs more passes and more ink than black and grey, and often an extra session.
The deposit secures your appointment and is deducted from the final price when the tattoo is done. It is not a fee on top of the price.
The minimum price is NOK 1,500. A small tattoo under 5 cm costs NOK 1,500–2,000, 15–25 cm costs NOK 2,500–7,000 depending on detail, 25–35 cm costs NOK 4,500–12,000, and designs over 35 cm start at NOK 8,000 per session. The consultation is free.
However small the design, we set up a sterile workstation with single-use needles, single-use cartridges, fresh ink and new protective equipment. Everything is thrown away afterwards. On top of that come drawing time, preparation and the appointment itself. The minimum price covers the fixed cost of doing the job safely.
Two designs of the same size can take very different amounts of time. Dense shading on the ribs and a simple line on the forearm are not the same job. So we give an honest range here, and an exact figure once the artist has seen the design and the placement.
